Nearly 350,000 motorists have admitted driving without car insurance during the past twelve months, according to a study by moneyexpert.com.

Half of that number were young drivers between the ages of 18 and 24 who said they had driven without adequate insurance.

Nearly half of the motorists polled said they were inadequately insured due to an oversight while 11 per cent said they could not afford the premiums.

Sean Gardner of MoneyExpert.com said: "It's a real worry that many people persist in driving without insurance. They are putting the personal and financial security of others at risk."

He added that insurance premiums have not risen so much that cost can be an excuse and said that there "are many ways to get a good value policy".

According to the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) every honest driver in the UK pays an extra £30 on their policy to cover the cost of uninsured drivers.ADNFCR-1161-ID-18564527-ADNFCR
