The majority of male drivers now take their vehicle to a garage for simple maintenance tasks such as topping up the oil, according to recent research by Castrol.

In a study of 1,360 drivers, only 14 per cent of male motorists said they would attempt to fix problems under the bonnet of their vehicle, a fact that may surprise car insurance customers.

Women were even less willing to sort car problems themselves and 87 per cent said they would get their partner to look at it or take the car to a professional.

Rob Stroud, from Castrol, said: "It seems that less modern-day males are able to look after their vehicles themselves. Men now appear more inclined to pop to the garage or visit a drive-through carwash."

It is estimated that the motor vehicle repair industry in the UK employed just over 170,000 people in about 44,000 businesses during 2001.ADNFCR-1161-ID-18562496-ADNFCR
