Lothian and Borders police force has launched a week-long initiative to encourage drivers to wear their seatbelt and slow their speed.

Officers will carry out road checks and unmarked patrols will be deployed across the force area.

The initiative is intended to remind motorists that not wearing a seatbelt is directly linked to the number of road accidents, which could potentially affect car insurance premiums as well as road safety matters.

However, many motorists believe the offence is at "the lower end of the scale", according to superintendent Alan Duncan from the road policing unit.

He said: "Speeding and the failure to wear a seatbelt are core road policing offences. This week-long initiative will highlight that we treat such offences with the utmost seriousness."

A total of 10,956 car users were injured in road accidents in 2006 in Scotland, according to statistics from the Scottish government released last year.ADNFCR-1161-ID-18562505-ADNFCR
