Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has announced it will be the first police force in the country to use a social networking site to catch criminals.
The force's web team has developed a Facebook application which members can install on their profile page and keep up-to-date with local incidents, such as vehicle crime.
Around 750 people have installed the application since its launch and are able to post messages and watch videos posted by GMP, as well as real-time updates of local news stories, missing persons stories and appeals.
Assistant chief constable Rob Taylor told the force's website: "This application allows Greater Manchester Police to further raise awareness of incidents taking place within our local communities in a bid to gain more intelligence and bring offenders to justice."
Facebook was founded in February 2004 and is the second most popular social media site in the world, with eight million users in the UK.
