Home » Green tax is a "scam", says ABD
The hike in tax on the most polluting cars is a scam and will have virtually no impact on the environment, according to the Association of British Drivers (ABD).
Alistair Darling has been accused of bringing in a stealth tax after Treasury figures, reported in the Telegraph, showed that the tax will double revenue to £4 billion but will reduce CO2 emissions by only one per cent.
ABD environment spokesman Ben Adams said: "The green tax is nothing more than greed tax. The government should reduce its economically damaging motoring taxes that are already hitting hardworking families and businesses."
Justine Greening, a shadow treasury minister, brought the treasury figures to light and accused the government of being fully aware that the move "would not change motorists' behaviour".
The Budget was announced in March this year and Alistair Darling announced the new scheme whereby cars producing less than 100g of CO2 per km would pay no vehicle excise duty while the most polluting cars would pay a lot more.
