The government is planning to change drink driving laws and give certain motorists a second chance when caught over the limit, reports the Times.

This could have an effect on car or van insurance policies if there is an increase in recorded offences.

A consultation paper, due to be published in the next month, will detail how the government wants to lower the current legal limit from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to just 50mg.

Drivers who are over this new limit but under 80mg would receive penalty points, a fine or be required to attend alcohol awareness classes.

However, if they were caught again within five years they would be disqualified.

Cathy Keeler, head of campaigns at road safety charity Brake told the Times: "We will save the most lives by reducing the limit and keeping the automatic ban."

The number of breath tests in Britain fell from 765,000 in 1999 to 578,000 in 2004, according to figures reported in the Guardian.ADNFCR-1161-ID-18564524-ADNFCR
