Adur and Worthing council is piloting a new scheme designed to reduce the cost of its light commercial vehicles (LCV) insurance.

It will pilot the GreenRoad Safety Centre, which is a risk management application that collects information from a vehicle about the driver's skills, on its fleet of refuse and recycling vehicles and LCVs.

The initiative is aiming to save money through reduced claims on light commercial vehicle insurance as well as improving the council's safety records and reducing its carbon footprint.

Chris Cook, risk manager at Worthing Borough council, said: "If one of our vehicles is driven badly there is a financial impact. Our insurance partner is keeping a close eye on the potential impact on premiums."

Users of the GreenRoad safety application are estimated to have experienced a 42 per cent reduction in at fault crashes.

According to the technology's website, fuel consumption can also be reduced through the GreenRoad Safety Centre.ADNFCR-1161-ID-18564531-ADNFCR
