Foreign lorries 'cost UK motorists £52m'
Accidents involving foreign lorries are costing UK motorists up to £52 million per year in vehicle repairs and wasted time, according to figures released by accident management specialist Accident Exchange.

Nearly 10,000 incidents on UK roads involve lorries that are registered abroad while one out of 350 accidents between March 2006 and March 2008 saw a foreign heavy goods vehicle implicated.

Steve Evans, chief executive of Accident Exchange, said: "The rate of incidents may be rising but so too is the escalating cost. The awareness of British drivers to the dangers is just as important if this figure is to be reduced."

He added that too few UK motorists "realise that left-hand drive HGVs are unable to see vehicles overtaking them on the right" and that "a greater appreciation" would help the situation.

The Department of Transport issued 40,000 window-mounted lenses to left-hand drive trucks last year in an effort to reduce the number of accidents caused by the trucks' blind spot.
